So, what exactly is Polybutylene Pipe?
 		  
Polybutylene is a form of plastic resin pipe used is some residential construction in the late 70's up until the mid 1990's. It was used due to it's low cost and ease of installation. It is very common in the Mid-Atlantic states. Some industry experts believe that 1 out of every 4 homes built during the period could be equipped with this form of plumbing. It was outlawed and is now failing in many homes across the area causing extensive property damage and loss due to flooding.

Look near your water heater, running across the ceiling in unfinished basements, and coming out of the walls to feed sinks and toilets.

What is the danger?

It is believed that oxidants in the water supplies, both public and well fed, such as chlorine, react with the polybutylene piping and acetal fittings causing them to scale and flake and become brittle. Micro-fractures result, and the basic structural integrity of the system is reduced. Therefore, the system becomes weak and may fail without warning causing damage to the building structure and personal property. We all know what happens when pipes break...especially, when we aren't there to shut off a supply valve.
